NORDIC SKI UPDATES

The Mammoth Nordic ski team hosted a series of races at Tamarack Ski Center on February 4 and 6. 9 high school teams and 7 middle schools from across California and Nevada traveled to the Eastside for some exciting ski racing . The dedicated Mammoth cross-country ski community was on full display throughout the weekend.  Beautiful weather, great grooming, rockstar volunteers and amazing race organization led to stellar events on both Friday and Sunday.

On Friday, the school league held a classic discipline race, with distances of 7.5km for the high school age group and 3.75km for the middle school teams.  A cold morning kept the snow in great conditions, while warming air temperatures and clear skies made for a comfortable and fast day of racing for the 78 High School skiers toeing the line at Twin Lakes.  The girls started first and Mammoth High School had great results from Ella Walker(4th) and Mia Karch(6th). The Mammoth boys also had strong results from Dane Karch(2nd), Wade Perry(7th), Owen Czeschin(8th), Davin Wolter(10th) and Jack Leonard(13th).

In the middle school race, 58 athletes set off on the fast course, with strong results from the Mammoth Team.  Olivia Karch took home the win in the girls race, with teammates Reagan Czeschin in 13th, Mackenna Smith in 14th, Alex Dennison in 15th and, close behind, Kylie Wolter in 16th. The boys also finished strong with Luken Senior(6th), Nat Parker(12th), Rider Peirce(13th), Will Parker(16th) and Noah Pourol(33rd), all skiing well on the home course.

Saturday was a rest day between races, but the regional clubs still got together and had an easy group ski.  It was a fun atmosphere with typical competitors from different clubs getting together to enjoy the comradery of fellow skiers.

On Sunday the 6th the racing moved to the Upper Lakes Basin for the Allan Bard Memorial Classic, a Junior National Qualifier.  Cold temperatures early in the morning once again kept the course firm and fast, for the mass start classic race. The 7.5km one lap course was a rolling, technical track for the U16, U18/20 skiers. The Mammoth women once again had a good showing with Mia Karch taking 2nd in the U18/20 field, and Ella Walker placing 3rd in the U16 race.  The men’s team had a great race as well with Wade Perry having a season’s best 6th in the U18/20 field, then U16 guys finishing well with Dane Karch in 1st, Cabot Godoy in 2nd, Owen Czeschin in 4th,  Davin Wolter in 5th, Mason Georgeson in 7th, and Jack Leonard in 8th.

The U14 and U12 racers charged the 3km course in a fast and furious race, full of crashes and close racing. The Mammoth girls team stormed to a great race with Olivia Karch taking the win, Malia Brock finishing 3rd, Reagan Czeschin in 4th and Kylie Wolter in 5th. The boys team followed suit with Luken Senior and Nat Parker going 4th and 5th and Will Parker in 7th.

Thanks to the great cross country skiing community, and Mammoth community as a whole; the Mammoth weekend is always a highlight on the calendar.

On Friday, February 11, the team traveled up to North Tahoe High School on Donner Summit to compete in a skate race on a course that was specifically groomed for the race. The high school team skied a 7km loop and the middle school team skied a 4km loop.
