WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Featuring Melannie German
She’s going to Stanford!!
This September, MMCF Senior Scholarship recipient Melannie German will be heading across the Sierra Nevada to Palo Alto to attend Stanford University. She will now be the third MHS alumni to attend the prestigious University. Melannie is a first generation college student thanks to her hard working immigrant parents who have instilled the importance of education so she can have a “life they didn’t have.”
Melannie was not always a great student. In fact, she struggled a lot in elementary school. In 5th grade, Melannie “got back on the horse” and never looked back. There were many times in high school that Melannie chose to miss out on social events, activities with her friends, and sleep to stay home and study.
Melannie has participated in activities such as cheer leading, served as various class officers, National Honor Society and a Greenpeace coach but being an Explorer with the MLPD and MCSO has influenced her the most. The purpose of the Explorer Program is to provide the young men and women of our community an opportunity to explore their interest and aptitudes in the field of law enforcement through on-the-job-exposure. Explorer training includes shop with a cop, learning codes, canine classes, training on domestic violence, crime scene investigation classes along with physical training as well. The program holds its participants to a very high standard and gives them an opportunity to establish professional and personal relationships with the police officers.
Melannie plans to study the legal field and has aspirations to become a District Attorney some day. The scholarships that she has received, such as the one from MMCF, mean a lot to her.
Melannie never would have thought that she would even apply to such a prestigious University however she did with the thought, “Let’s see what happens.” Dreams really do come true!!
